Play It Safe This Fourth of July with These Fireworks Safety Tips

By Williams & Brown LLP on June 23, 2015

Say the words “the Fourth of July” to just about anyone in Texas, and you’ll immediately conjure up images of fireworks lighting up the night sky. Since more house fires and burn injuries occur during the Independence Day holiday than at any other time during the year, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), it’s important to practice fireworks safety if you plan to include home fireworks in your holiday plans.

The National Council on Fireworks Safety and many experienced Texas injury lawyers recommend putting safety first. Here are some places to begin:

  • Learn everything you can about fireworks safety. The more you know, the easier it is to protect your home and family from serious injury. Read up on fireworks safety, learn your state and local laws and rules, and seek out information on first aid for burn injuries and fire prevention.
  • Use safety common sense. If you’re lighting backyard fireworks, light only one at a time. Have a fire extinguisher or bucket of water handy in case a firework gets out of control. During cleanup, soak all used or “dud” fireworks in water before putting them in a metal trash can. Wear eye protection, and never drink alcohol while using fireworks!
  • Consider leaving the show to the professionals. Professional fireworks shows pose fewer risks to spectators than backyard displays, and they don’t require you to do any setting up, reading packaging, or cleaning up once the show is complete. Simply look up fireworks shows near you and arrive in time for the display to begin!

The experienced Waco burn injury attorneys at Williams & Brown LLP wish everyone a safe and fun Fourth of July celebration!
