Avoiding Slips, Trips, and Falls This Holiday Season

By Williams & Brown LLP on December 8, 2014

Slip and Fall AttorneyHow common are slip and fall accidents over the holidays? The answer is very common, according to several Texas chiropractors.

There are many possible reasons that fall injuries increase during the holidays.  The weather is often a contributing factor, when rain, slush, or even snow makes walkways slippery.  More people are climbing ladders to put up holiday decorations, which mean an increased risk of people falling from those heights.  Spills in the kitchen during holiday cooking can cause someone to slip, as can wrapping paper strewn around the floor while wrapping or unwrapping gifts.  And dim holiday lighting can make everyday hazards tougher to see, increasing the chances of a fall.

How can you help prevent holiday slips, trips, and falls this season?  Experienced Texas slip and fall injury lawyers recommend focusing on the following areas:

  • Make sure walkways inside and outside your home stay clear and well-lit.  Change burned-out light bulbs, clear away snow and ice, and keep clutter out of entryways and hallways.
  • If you’re using a ladder to put up holiday decorations, make sure the ladder is stable before you climb it.  Read and follow all safety instructions on the ladder.  Consider asking someone to “spot” you while on the ladder.  Never let kids climb a ladder unattended.
  • Clean up kitchen spills right away, and urge family members to clean up messes made with wrapping, decorating, or holiday crafts.  Remind children that the privilege of holiday fun comes with the responsibility of cleaning up afterwards.
  • Make several trips to and from your vehicle instead of overloading yourself with holiday packages.  You’ll reduce the risk of back or arm strain as well as the risk of a fall.
