Birth TraumaInjuries to the infant that result from mechanical forces such as compression or traction during birth are also sometimes characterized as birth trauma. Birth injuries or birth traumas may include brain injuries caused by lack of oxygen or traumatic brain or skull injuries. Other birth injuries or trauma include injury to the brachial plexus nerves resulting in Erb’s palsy or Klumpe’s palsy. Unfortunately, there are situations in which brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, shoulder and arm injuries and others are caused by mistakes made by doctors, nurses, hospitals, or other medical professionals during the labor and delivery process. Almost three percent of the children born in the United States suffer some form of birth injury. Some of these children—those with minor injuries—may recover quickly and completely, but others are subject to a lifetime of disability and health complications.
