Hypoxia – Lack of Oxygen
Hypoxia refers to inadequate oxygen content in the blood. Hypoxia in which there is complete deprivation of oxygen is called anoxia. As a result of hypoxia or anoxia, the brain or other organs may not receive enough oxygen. Hypoxia can lead to acidosis in the blood. If the baby becomes acidotic because of hypoxia or ischemia, acidosis can destroy brain cells and cause permanent brain injury.
There are several mechanisms that can cause hypoxia or lack of adequate oxygen, including:
• Umbilical Cord Compression
• Uterine Hyperstimulation
• Fetal Intolerance to Labor
• Prolonged Labor
• Nuchal Cord
• Pre-eclampsia
